Average FPS Does Not Tell the Whole Story

  • Admin

Average frame rate is one of the most common numbers used to describe game performance, but it does not always describe how smooth a game actually feels.

A game averaging 100 FPS can still feel inconsistent if individual frames occasionally take much longer to render. This is why measurements such as frame time, 1% lows, and 0.1% lows have become useful when evaluating performance.

Two systems can produce nearly identical average FPS while delivering noticeably different experiences. One may remain close to its average most of the time, while the other repeatedly drops for brief moments.

For actual gameplay, consistency often matters almost as much as the headline frame-rate number. A stable 70 FPS can sometimes feel better than a nominal 100 FPS that frequently stutters.
