Owning a Disc Does Not Always Mean Owning a Complete Game

  • Admin

Physical media is often treated as the safest form of game preservation, but modern releases can make the situation more complicated.

A disc may contain a fully playable game. It may also depend on a substantial day-one update, downloadable content, an online authentication service, or files that were never included on the physical media.

That means two boxes sitting on a shelf can represent very different preservation situations.

Physical ownership still has important advantages, particularly when the complete game exists on the media. But the presence of a disc alone does not guarantee long-term independence from external servers and downloads.

Understanding exactly what exists on the physical copy has therefore become an important part of modern game preservation.
