Difficulty and Friction Are Not the Same Thing

  • Admin

A difficult game asks the player to perform something demanding. A frustrating game may instead make the process of attempting that challenge unnecessarily inconvenient.

Those two ideas are easy to confuse.

A demanding boss encounter can still feel fair if the player understands why they failed and can quickly try again. The same encounter may become exhausting if every failure requires a long loading screen, repeated dialogue, or several minutes of unrelated gameplay.

Good difficulty usually preserves the challenge while minimizing the parts that do not contribute to it.

The distinction matters because removing friction does not necessarily mean making a game easier. Sometimes it simply allows the player to spend more time engaging with the difficult part that actually matters.
