Demo Discs Were More Important Than They Seem Today

  • Admin

Before fast internet connections and digital storefronts became normal, trying a game before buying it was not always easy.

Demo discs helped solve that problem. They were distributed with magazines, hardware, other games, and promotional packages, often containing playable sections from several different titles.

Their importance was not limited to marketing. A demo could expose players to genres or developers they would never have deliberately searched for. The limited selection also meant people often spent far more time with individual demos than their short length might suggest.

For many players, demo discs became small archives of a particular moment in gaming. Their menus, music, unfinished builds, and strange collections of unrelated games now document an era that digital storefronts largely replaced.
