Why Input Latency Matters Even at High Frame Rates

  • Admin

A high frame rate can make movement appear smooth, but responsiveness also depends on how long it takes for an input to become visible on screen.

That delay can occur at several stages: the input device, the game engine, CPU processing, GPU rendering, the display pipeline, and the monitor itself.

This is why two games running at the same FPS can feel different to control.

Competitive games make latency particularly noticeable, but it matters elsewhere too. Camera movement, aiming, driving, platforming, and menu navigation can all feel more immediate when the full input-to-display chain responds quickly.

FPS describes part of the experience. Responsiveness describes another.
